Voices of Organization Development
"Organization development is a system-wide process of planned change aimed toward improving overall organization effectiveness by way of enhanced congruence of such key organizational dimensions as external environment, mission, strategy, leadership, culture, structure, information and reward systems, and work policies and procedures."
Warner Burke and David Bradford
"An organization's ability to learn, and translate that learning into action rapidly, is the ultimate competitive advantage."
Jack Welch
"The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency."
Bill Gates
"The way enterprises are conceptualized has a very large effect on what they do, and what they do affects the way they are conceptualized."
Russell Ackoff
"Despite the fact that "growth" and development are often treated as synonyms, they are not the same thing. Neither is required for the other. A rubbish heap grows but does not develop, and a person can develop without growing."
Russell Ackoff

Organization Development
Cenek Company offers organization assessment, design and development services for:
- Organizations that want to do battle in the hyper-competitive global marketplace
- Small firms that are experiencing growing pains
- Venture capital firms or corporations desiring assistance with an investment or acquisition
- Organizations that want to enhance their operating performance, level of teamwork or employee commitment and engagement
- Firms that wish to manage their talent and retain employees in a more sophisticated manner.
Our primary organization development methodology evolves around the concept of organization fitness, or "org fitness" for short. By fitness, we mean the extent to which the systems, structure, people and work culture support each other and an organization's business strategy or operational imperatives. Our belief is that organizations that are more "fit" are better able to adapt to unanticipated events in their business environment. A high level of "fitness" is important for all firms-large and small. In fact, the last remaining source of competitive advantage in today's highly uncertain, volatile business environment lies in "organization fitness," or "org fitness."
A Multi-Method Diagnostic Process
We use a multi-method approach (i.e., direct observation, surveys, interviews and leadership assessment) to determine fitness because like the physician who relies on multiple tests and examinations - e.g., EKG and lab tests - we believe that a thorough assessment of a firm's fitness cannot be achieved through one diagnostic method. In short, we believe that accurate assessment and development requires customized approaches "made to order," not something taken "off the rack."
Depending on the client's concern, organization issue, or preference, Cenek Company will use several of
the following diagnostic methods:
- Interviews of the key leadership team to establish the current climate and operating effectiveness
- An OrganizationScan which is a qualitative, interview-based employee survey that measures, through the perception of a subsection of the workforce, the degree of effectiveness of the firm's structures, systems, people and work culture.
- A Strategic Alignment Survey which is a quantitative-based employee survey that measures the same dimensions of organization fitness as OrganizationScan. The survey includes a standard set of questionnaire items, plus any additional questions that the client desires, and can be completed via the web or through paper and pencil methods.
- LeaderScan which is a multi-rater leadership assessment survey. It measures the degree to which the leader exhibits behavior that's typical of change-oriented leaders.
- Hogan Assessment products that employ a measurement of the Big Five personality constructs to establish leadership potential, effectiveness and development areas.
Follow-Up and Measurement
Too many firms, using David Nadler's adage, "rush to plexiglass." We believe that organization development initiatives should be measured. It's important not for ROI calculations, but rather to gauge that progress is being made. Cenek Company works with clients to mutually establish the most effective means and methods for measurement.
